Chemistry Facts 0.1
In
the year of 1910, two German chemists Fritz Haber and Carl
Bosch changed the world of agriculture with their simple ageless invention.
All they did was combining atmospheric nitrogen which plays a critical role in
the biochemistry
of every living thing, with hydrogen to form ammonia. Although nitrogen is the
most common gas in our atmosphere, but it doesn’t like reacting with very much,
which means that plants can’t extract it directly from the air. Consequently, a
major limiting factor in agriculture has been the availability of nitrogen.
From
the Haber-Bosch
process nitrogen can be extracted from atmosphere by means of ammonia which
in turn can be used as fertilizers in agriculture. This invention by the German
duo is so important that till today about 80% of the nitrogen in our bodies
comes from the Haber-Bosch process.
The
world of chemistry is full of such known and unknown facts. To explore the
emerging entities in the world of chemistry, I hope to see you in the upcoming Chemistry
Congress 2018.
